Franklin starts the season with a win

The April mid-week stableford marks the start of the summer golf calendar; indeed it was the first competition played without preferred lies.  Nigel Franklin took advantage of the Wednesday morning sunshine to record a fine round of 38 points; a score that would not be bettered for the remainder of the competition.

The weather deteriorated in the afternoon and many of the entrants were unable to complete their rounds, and the conditions on Thursday were quite challenging with a strong westerly breeze.  In second place, but by some distance, was a resurgent Pete Churchill with a score of 34 points, and in third place was another of the earlier starters, Don Morfee with 33 points.

Perhaps the most remarkable round was that of new member Kristian Fomes (pictured above).  His round included an unusual par three on the iconic ‘Dell’ third hole.  Kristian’s initial tee shot sailed into the trees, never to be seen again.  He re-tee’d the ball, to play his third shot, and promptly holed the ball!

Although it wasn’t a true hole-in-one it was the first ever time that Kristian had holed from his tee shot, and he was suitably pleased with his achievement.  The feat was all the more remarkable since the pin was positioned at the back of the green, in arguably the most difficult pin placement on the green.  Well done Kristian!
